First-time loans in South Africa

Your first short-term loan carries the higher of the two statutory interest caps — 5% a month rather than the 3% that applies to a repeat loan in the same calendar year — and will usually be for a smaller amount than you asked for. Both are deliberate. This page explains what a first application looks like from the lender’s side, and how to make the first loan work in your favour.

Check these three things before you sign — here or anywhere

  • The lender’s NCRCP number is published on its own site, and it checks out in the National Credit Regulator’s register.
  • The pre-agreement quote breaks out the total cost of credit: interest, initiation fee, service fee and VAT — as one figure you can compare.
  • Nobody asks you for an upfront “release fee”. A registered credit provider never charges you before it pays out.

Calculated at the statutory maximum. The repeat rate applies to a further short-term loan in the same calendar year — repaying the first one on time is what unlocks it.

Why your first offer is smaller than you asked for

A lender with no repayment history from you is working from your bank statements and bureau record alone. Starting small is how it manages that uncertainty, and it is also the sensible outcome for you — a first loan you clear comfortably opens a larger, cheaper second one.

A thin credit file is not the same as a bad one, but it can be assessed as cautiously. If you have never had credit, the first application is often the hardest, and a small, cleanly repaid loan is the fastest way to change that.

The repeat-loan cap is worth understanding: a second short-term loan within the same calendar year is capped at 3% a month rather than 5%. Repaying your first loan on time is not just about the record — it materially lowers the price of the next one.
