How to claim UIF
The Unemployment Insurance Fund pays benefits to contributors who lose income through retrenchment, illness, maternity or adoption. It is money you have already contributed, there is a time limit on claiming, and it is routinely left unclaimed.
If you contributed while employed, you are entitled to claim. Contributions are a small deduction each month, visible on your payslip, and the benefit is proportional to what you earned and how long you contributed.
You need your ID, your UI-19 form from your employer confirming the employment ended, your banking details and your service certificate. Get the UI-19 from the employer immediately — obtaining it later, once you have lost contact, is the most common obstacle.
Claim as soon as employment ends. There is a limit on how long after the event you may claim, and missing it forfeits the benefit entirely.
Maternity benefits can be claimed while still employed, and are separate from any employer maternity arrangement. Many people claim only one when both apply.
