The national minimum wage
South Africa has a national minimum wage that applies to most workers, including domestic workers and farm workers. It is reviewed and adjusted periodically, and being paid below it is a matter you can act on.
The minimum is set per ordinary hour worked, which matters for part-time and piece work — the hourly floor applies regardless of how the arrangement is described.
Because the rate is adjusted periodically, always check the current figure with the Department of Employment and Labour rather than relying on a published summary, including this one.
If you are paid below it, you can report the matter to the Department of Employment and Labour, and to the CCMA where the dispute concerns your employment more broadly. Both are free.
You are also entitled to a payslip showing your hours, rate, deductions and net pay. An employer who will not provide one is not meeting a basic obligation, and a payslip is also what you need for most credit applications.
